This policy document outlines a vision for Africa and articulates the continent’s climate needs via a 6-point climate strategy which have the potential to enable African institutions to renew their engagement with climate change impacts and craft effective policies that will help to facilitate climate resilient societies and economies.

This publication has been developed under the Nairobi work programme on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change, and provides an introduction to a range of different assessment approaches and methodologies and shares best practices and lessons learned. 

This publication highlights the important contribution that the Nairobi work programme has made to advancing work related to the four components of climate change adaptation.

This analytical report systematically considers a country’s vulnerability, and its exposure to natural hazards to determine a ranking of countries based on their disaster risk. This edition focuses on health and healthcare as decisive factors in determining the extent of harm countries will experience in the wake of a natural hazard.

African journalists have critical roles to play in explaining the cause and effects of climate change, in describing what countries and communities can do to adapt, and in reporting on what governments and companies do, or not, to respond to these threats. Yet across Africa the media can and should do more to tell the story of climate change. UNESCO produced this book to help fill this important gap.

This activity report provides the results of research which was done on loss and damage. Loss and damage occurs when there are barriers that impede planning and implementation of adaptation, and when physical and social limits to adaptation are reached or exceeded. Across the nine research sites, households struggle to manage climatic stressors on their household economy and their livelihoods. Despite their efforts to cope with the impact of extreme weather events and to adapt to slow-onset climatic changes, many incurred residual impact that they could not adequately manage.
