In Kyrgyz Republic, the UN CC:Learn project aims to strengthen climate education through the development and implementation of a National Climate Change and Green Economy Learning Strategy.

During the second week of November 2019, the Government of Kyrgyz Republic hosted its fifth annual Green Economy Week, which was co-organized by the Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE). The event was attended by government officials, policy-makers, members of civil society, academia, and the private sector, and was a unique opportunity for the country to reconfirm its commitment to a green economy transition, climate action, and sustainable development.

An inception workshop for the launch of the national UN CC:Learn project took place on 12 November, during the Green Economy Week. In Kyrgyz Republic, the UN CC:Learn project aims to strengthen climate education through the development and implementation of a National Climate Change and Green Economy Learning Strategy. This new project builds on work carried out by PAGE in 2018 to assess the learning needs and the capacities of institutions and individual to support the green economy learning in the country and made recommendation on how green economy learning can be strengthened.

The Inception Workshop was organized by Climate Finance Centre, with support from the one UN Climate Change Learning Partnership (UN CC:Learn) and the UN Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE). It was attended by more than 40 representatives of government agencies, academia, NGOs and student’s unions, who generated a lively and fruitful discussion.

The workshop was successful in achieving its aim to raise the visibility of climate change learning, create awareness of the project among interested stakeholders, establish consensus on scope and objectives and chart key milestones towards the development and implementation of a National Climate Change Learning/Green Economy strategy. The event was well-covered by local media, with an interview broadcasted on one of the main national TV channels.

The launch of the UN CC:Learn initiative in Kyrgyz Republic coincided aptly with the ratification of the Paris Agreement by the Parliament on the very same day. “To develop and implement the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution and Adaptation Plan, Kyrgyzstan need to build up the necessary human capital. The UN CC:Learn project is an important step in this direction”, said the Deputy Resident Coordinator Mrs Jenty Kirsch-Wood at the launch of the workshop.

The project will take place in the period December 2019 – August 2020 and will result in the adoption of a Learning Strategy and the implementation of several learning actions. Watch this space for more news from Kyrgyz Republic in the coming months!
