This activity report presents the discussions during the Second Energy Forum for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency and the role of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs), which was held in Hurghada, Egypt, 18-19 June 2014. The report explores the role that SMEs can play in sustainable energy development in the Arab region as well as the technical, institutional, financial and legislative instruments that can encourage the engagement of SMEs in these fields.

The activity report presents the proceedings of the eleventh session of the Committee on Water Resources of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), which was held in Amman, on 26 and 27 March 2015. The session agenda included priority issues such as climate change, its impacts on water resources in the Arab region and progress achieved in implementing the Regional Initiative for the Assessment of the Impact of Climate Change on Water Resources and Socio-Economic Vulnerability in the Arab Region (RICCAR) as well as building the capacities of member States in climate change negotiations and preparations for COP21.

The agenda also includes progress achieved in implementing the Regional Initiative for Establishing a Regional Mechanism for Improved Monitoring and Reporting on Access to Water Supply and Sanitation Services in the Arab Region (MDG+ Initiative), regional cooperation for shared water resources management, the post-2015 development agenda from the perspective of the Arab region and the water-energy-food nexus in the Arab region. 

This activity report presents the proceedings of the tenth session of the Committee on Energy of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), which was held in Amman on 22 and 23 March 2015. The session agenda contained several priority topics, including sustainable energy in the Arab region, especially energy security and regional integration, technology adaptation policy and potential for local manufacturing of adequate renewable energy equipment and a regional agenda for the implementation of the United Nations Decade on Sustainable Energy for All, as well as natural resources management for sustainable development, including the post-2015 development agenda from the perspective of the Arab region and the energy-water-food nexus in the Arab region.

The guidance document provides a starting point to plan surveys, create a common understanding of terms and concepts, establish a common framework for reviewing and evaluating final energy consumption surveys, and summarize regional experiences. The document serves as a reference on methodologies for data collection regarding energy use by the transport sector, as well as providing models for estimation (supply and use) and case studies from Morocco, Palestine, Tunisia and Canada.

This technical document measures the impact of climate change on freshwater resources through an integrated assessment, in order to identify the related underlying causes of socioeconomic and environmental vulnerability in the Arab region. The document is prepared within the framework of the Regional Initiative for the Assessment of the Impact of Climate Change on Water Resources and Socio-Economic Vulnerability in the Arab Region (RICCAR). 

The booklet sets out an analytical framework for understanding the water-energy-food security nexus in the Arab region and considers the linkages that affect the achievement of water, energy and food security and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a view to mitigating climate change and ensuring access to food, water and sustainable energy for all. 

The guidance document addresses the challenges of rural energy enterprises in developing countries, and sets out solutions such as cooking energy service parameters. The document also explains the AIREC cooking energy service decision support tool and the performance assessments of various cooking energy technologies. It also identifies the importance of biomass as a potential alternative to fossil fuels, and of many other petrochemicals depending on local resources and community needs.

This activity report presents the project “Enhancing and Improving Access to Energy Services through Development of Public-Private Renewable Energy Partnerships.” The report examines seven Jordanian case studies on renewable energy public-private partnerships (RE/PPPs) in different regions/areas based on economic and social conditions.

The guidance document provides an overview of energy security from various perspectives and in line with sustainable development, with objective to consolidate a common energy security concept for the Arab region. The document addresses factors such as geographical distribution of natural energy resources, energy systems, strategies, policies, infrastructure, geopolitical impacts, and national need, and lists recommendations for improving regional cooperation for energy security.

The study analyzes the current state of the energy sector and the roles of relevant institutions. It further addresses reciprocal effects between global energy market and Arab energy cooperation for energy security. 

This guidance document presents an analytical framework and a series of case studies for understanding the water-energy-food security nexus in the Arab region. The analytical framework considers the linkages that affect the achievement of water, energy and food security through the lens of sustainable development and the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, with a view to mitigating climate change and ensuring access to food, water and sustainable energy for all in the context of a human-rights approach.

This analytical report presents past trends in domestic energy policy in the Arab region and the capacity of today’s policies and institutions to reverse current unsustainable production and consumption patterns, and meet development and energy security needs. The report also contains recommendations for more effective policies and greater regional cooperation on the development of sustainable energy systems.

This activity report examines progress on securing human dignity and well-being in the Arab countries and what is needed to achieve sustainable development in this region in turmoil. It also looks at the complex factors shaping the region: the occupation of Palestinian and other Arab lands; ongoing conflicts; governance, human rights and institutional deficits; and shortcomings in terms of financing, science and technology, trade and statistical capacity.

The report stresses that urgent action is needed at the national and regional levels, and that integrated, long-term and evidence-based planning and investments that address the root causes of instability in the region are indispensable for achieving the SDGs.

This guidance document aims to summarise the current state of knowledge on the impacts of climate change on food security and nutrition. Among the most significant impacts of climate change is the potential increase of food insecurity and malnutrition.  Climate change will act as a hunger risk multiplier exacerbating current vulnerabilities, with one study projecting up to 20% more people at risk of hunger.

This activity report showcases how WFP implements concrete disaster risk reduction activities, as natural disasters are a leading cause of hunger. Disasters affect the economic and physical access to food, the availability and stability of supplies, and nutrition.

This guidance document rpovides a statement on the rainfall season over the equatorial sector of the Greater Horn of Africa (GHA) region, duirng the October to December 2016 season. Key factors expected to influence the regional climate during the OND 2016 season include the evolution of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) anomalies over the tropical Oceans. 

This bulletin reports on the atmospheric burdens and rates of change of the most important long-lived greenhouse gases (LLGHGs) – carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, CFC-12 and CFC-11 – and provides a summary of the contributions of the other gases.
