Despite their potential, censuses have not been sufficiently exploited as key data source for environmental studies and climate change analysis. This slide presenation presents an overview of the potential of census data, provides some examples of the use of census data in particular countries, and highlights the potential of such data to provide evidence in still unexplored areas.

The paper has a focus on two main themes: the interaction between urban density and the generation of greenhouse gases and how this affects mitigation strategies; and the consequences of climate change on urban settlements of varying population densities and how this affects adaptation strategies.
