This manual provides directions to information and communication technology (ICT) companies to promote and establish effective and efficient procurement practices and to make “green” solutions available to their customers, embedding greater awareness of environmental issues in their business transactions. Some standard considerations for ICT companies are also provided in this document. Also, a systematic guidance to address an environmentally sustainable step-by-step procurement process is included, detailing green considerations to be used when procuring products and services. This aims to lead to the implementation of effective and environmentally-friendly procurement practices, which take into account ICT good, network or service Life Cycle Considerations (LCC).

This technical document analyzes the potential and existing contributions of broadband towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal 7 (MDG7), which targets environmental sustainability, including reducing CO2. The review conducted in this study indicates that, in general terms, when it comes to leveraging the potential of broadband to promote environmental sustainability, high-income countries tend to focus on carbon abatement strategies, whereas developing nations envisage the use of broadband to reinforce the preservation of biodiversity and promote eco-friendly development. The final two chapters of the study review in detail two countries, Australia and Rwanda, who have featured environmental sustainability as a key element in their national broadband policies.

This analytical report contains a compilation of case studies on national adaptation planning processes, including tools and approaches used for the prioritization and implementation of adaptation actions. The report focuses on existing strategies and plans that some countries have developed to adapt to the adverse effects of climate change, including on elements of the prioritization and implementation of adaptation activities. It also provides a synthesis of relevant additional examples of adaptation planning and practices undertaken in other countries, which were reported under the Nairobi work programme on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change.

This techical document aims to defyne Gerogia’s technology priorities regarding mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and adaptation to climate change. The study defines three priority sectors: the Black Sea coastal zone represented by a new segment (Anaklia) not considered in previous studies; extreme geological events (landslides, mudflows, floods); and agriculture (land degradation, water erosion and irrigation). For each priority sector, the document includes recommended technologies, solutions and project ideas.

This analytical report is a mapping of countries that have included elements of disaster risk reduction into their education system. It captures national experiences whilst noting key challenges in countries where disaster risk reduction is less clearly prioritised or where specific teacher training doesn’t exist.

This atlas on health and climate change is a product of collaboration between the meteorological and public health communities. It provides sound scientific information on the connections between weather and climate and major health challenges. These range from diseases of poverty to emergencies arising from extreme weather events and disease outbreaks. They also include environmental degradation, the increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases and the universal trend of demographic ageing.

This techincial document assesses the World Bank Group’s experience in climate adaptation. The evaluation draws lessons from experience with adaptation to both current levels of climate variability and ongoing climate change. It reviews the impact of longer-standing efforts to deal with climate variability, for instance via drought relief, sustainable land management, and flood control. The evaluation also looks at how, and how well, the World Bank Group has incorporated climate change risks into the design and appraisal of long-lived infrastructure. It assesses early lessons from a new crop of activities that explicitly grapple with climate adaptation at the national level.

This manual provides local policy-makers and major stakeholders with a methodology to plan for climate change. These plans must address both mitigation (e.g., reducing the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere) and adaptation (responding to the impacts of climate change). The publication stresses that, to be effective, local plans for climate change require the involvement of a variety of stakeholders and a specific focus on the most vulnerable groups. It also gives guidance so that any city can get started no matter how limited its resources. In particular, it describes “quick win” activities that address both climate and urban issues simultaneously.

This publication is a call to action for cities to address climate change. It takes the view that this challenge also presents cities with an opportunity to review urban policy and local strategies which can lead to greater livability and vibrancy. To that end, it offers twelve key messages and a series of practical case studies showing how cities can respond to the challenge of climate change in a way that ultimately improves urban sustainability.

This manual aims to inform and capacitate local government officials so as to assist them in initiating, developing and managing Clean Development Mechanism and Verified Emission Reduction projects within their cities, towns or regions. It highlights that key areas of local government competencies that city officials may want to target when implementing carbon trading projects include town and urban planning, infrastructure development, service provision, waste management, energy provisioning and transportation. Part A of this document provides an overview of the carbon market.  Part B describes the strategic decisions that need to be taken in order to identify and assess the potential of embarking on a carbon trading project. Part C outlines the specific steps to follow in developing a successful carbon trading project, once the initial conceptualisation has been completed.

The analytical report makes a strong case for trade and investment in climate-smart goods and services, in particular climate-smart technologies, that are clean and contribute to energy efficiency and conservation or use renewable energy. This would result in a triple win for economic growth, trade and environment. The publication therefore discusses a holistic policy approach to promote trade and investment in climate-smart goods and services, including regional cooperation.

This policy document includes a roadmaps that explores the opportunities that a low carbon green growth path offers to the Asia-Pacific region. It articulates five tracks on which to drive the economic system change necessary to pursue low carbon green growth as a new economic development path. In particular, it highlights that the “visible structure” of the economy, comprising such physical infrastructure as transport, buildings and energy systems, together with the “invisible structure”, which encompasses market prices, governance, regulations and lifestyles, have to be re-oriented towards resource efficiency. The roadmap provides policymakers in the region with a comprehensive list of policy options and practical implementing strategies as well as examples of successful practices, woven through more than 100 fact sheets and case studies.

This technical document includes a study on cost elements of reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, including the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks (REDD+) in Tanzania. The main product of the cost elements study is a comprehensive Excel-based calculation tool, which enables project managers to estimate the cost elements of REDD+ within their project context. This document introduces the tool and explains its functions and possibilities.

This manual has been developed to present a concise set of options and policy suggestions for countries and interested stakeholders on promoting more efficient lighting. It provides best practices and case studies from programmes throughout the world and addresses technology, policy, consumer and environmental protection issues as well as climate change. This toolkit has been conceived as a means to promote an integrated policy approach. This ensures that areas sometimes overlooked in national phase-out programmes are considered and implemented to support a national efficient lighting strategy. An integrated policy approach encompasses: minimum energy performance standards; supporting policies; monitoring, verification and enforcement; and environmentally sound management.

This analytical report assesses existing synergies between livestock and the renewable energy sector. It considers the potential benefits that could arise from the interaction of these sectors in areas  such as mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, environmental preservation (soil restoration), and availability of clean, affordable and reliable energy sources (for example biogas). It outlines livestock’s potential as a renewable energy source, through the use of cost-effective technologies such as biogas systems that can stem methane emissions from livestock manure by recovering the gas and using it as an energy source in alternative to wood/charcoal or fossil fuel. It also explores the climate change scenario, considers viable applications of Renewable Energy Technologies (RETs) addressed for small-scale farmers and livestock keepers at different levels of the value chain and examines how this can provide multifunctional benefits for households, community and the environment.

This analytical report focuses on exploring an increasingly important question: how can developing countries effectively integrate Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) tools within climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies? The contribution of this report is two-fold. It presents the potential of ICTs towards adaptation and mitigation through the concrete case of Ghana, illustrating the challenges and opportunities faced by developing countries in this field. The report complements this analysis by offering concrete lessons learned and practical suggestions aimed at developing country decision makers and practitioners, thus fostering the adoption of novel, ICT-supported approaches to climate change adaptation and mitigation. This document is composed of two reports that present complementary views on the challenges and opportunities posed by climate change to developing countries in the fields of adaptation and mitigation.

This analytical report discusses the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the smart grid with a view of energy efficiency, with the ultimate goal of hindering climate changes. This is done by starting from the consideration that ICT equipment consumes energy too, and this extra energy consumption could be quite significant. This leads to the conclusion that any ICT architectural choice and any implementation should focus first on its own efficiency. This report also underlines that the risk of having an ICT infrastructure with a negative energy efficiency balance often comes from the “scale” factor: this means small and low-power devices may have a huge energy footprint when they are massively deployed. Furthermore the report gives a brief understanding about the possible path toward a “green” ICT, which is the implementation of power-aware and conscious devices for communication and information management.

This activity report describes activities relating to greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory reviews conducted during the period November 2011 to October 2012 and to activities planned for 2013. It also provides information on the training activities under the Convention and under the Kyoto Protocol, the meeting of inventory lead reviewers, progress made in updating the roster of experts and progress made in the maintenance and development of the GHG information system, including the Common Reporting Format (CRF) Reporter.

This analytical report is a collection of evidence-based papers by scholars and practitioners that explore the interconnections between gender equality and sustainable development across a range of sectors and global development issues such as climate change and energy, but also health, education, food security, human rights, consumption and production patterns, and urbanization. It provides evidence from various sectors and regions on how women’s equal access and control over resources not only improves the lives of individuals, families and nations, but also helps ensure the sustainability of the environment. The papers in this publication make detailed recommendations for policy makers and practitioners to ensure that policies and programmes effectively integrate gender equality and that women participate fully and meaningfully.

This activity report outlines the proceedings of a hands-on training workshop for the Africa region on national greenhouse gas inventories, conducted in Swakopmund, Namibia, from 23 to 27 April 2012, by the Consultative Group of Experts on National Communications from Parties not included in Annex I to the Convention (CGE), in collaboration with the Technical Support Unit for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories. It also summarizes the feedback and recommendations from the participants of the workshop, the updated CGE training materials, and the financial and technical issues relating to the preparation of national communications.
