This guidance document is based on how climate change increases the risk of natural disasters and places a strain on livelihoods, contributing to high-risk behaviours and other negative coping strategies among affected populations, such as resorting to unscrupulous recruitment agencies associated with human smuggling and trafficking. It explores  the links between climate change, human trafficking and smuggling in the Asia-Pacific region. To address these challenges, the document provides an overview of best practices from existing projects in the region. 

This activity report aimed at readers who seek to build economic evidence in support of the inclusion of actions on agriculture in climate change plans and programmes, particularly at the national level under the umbrella of nationally determined contributions to the December 2015 Paris Agreement, which aims to restrict a rise in global temperatures and manage risks.

This guidance document showcases how the world’s smallest island nations are now using new climate prediction tools to boost their economies and enhance livelihoods in areas as diverse as renewable energy, agriculture and national economic planning. The case studies reflect on the fact that, despite their remoteness and limited resources, many Small Island Developing States are now leading the world in their application of climate prediction services to strengthen their economies and develop a brighter, more hopeful future for their communities.

17th session, the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change established the National Adaptation Plan process as a way to facilitate effective adaptation planning in Least Developed Countries and other developing countries.

This Policy Brief is intended to facilitate understanding concerning the role of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) in implementation of the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions at national level (INDCs). NMHSs are encouraged to access the INDCs submitted by their governments and explore the sectors and areas of competency to which they can actively contribute during implementation.

This analytical document highlights the identification of priority needs for operationalization of the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS), based on the foundations and context of the 10-year GFCS Implementation Plan. The Plan identifies three phases implementation: I focused on establishing the Framework’s infrastructure and initiating and facilitating demonstration projects in the initial priority areas; II is the development phase, focusing on the core regional and national mechanisms for climate services; and III, the expansion and continuation phase, during which maintenance and sustainability of institutional mechanisms will be emphasized.

This analytical document assesses the capacity building efforts dedicated to the Least Developed Countries. Decisions made at the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – such as those related to finance, adaptation, mitigation, technology, and capacity building – have major ramifications for LDCs. To ensure that the interests of LDCs are adequately and fairly reflected in the ongoing climate change negotiations, it is imperative that LDCs engage effectively in intergovernmental climate change negotiations, decision-making processes and eventual implementation of the decisions taken.

This technical provides a synthesis of the information presented in the first World Ocean Assessment and does not introduce any new material or interpretation of the information presented in that Assessment. It is based upon the First Global Integrated Marine Assessment (first World Ocean Assessment), which was released in January 2016, and, in particular, upon the summary of that Assessment, which was approved by the General Assembly in December 2015.

This technical document intends to determine the environmental benefits of using methanol as fuel on ships with regards to emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs), NOx and SOx. This technical document identifies best practices developed in the shipping industry, particularly since the introduction of the mandatory requirement to carry on board a Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) from 1 January 2013. The study’s main recommendations include: 1) Make the SEEMP more of a guideline/handbook for the industry with clearer procedures; 2) Support needed in setting realistic and useful goals; and 3)Support needed in developing effective KPIs that can be used in the daily improvement work; and Needs for guidelines.

This technical document encourages and guides local and national level discussions on how to improve the sustainability of the maritime transportation system at the ship-port interface. This study identifies measures and best practices that stakeholders can consider to reduce air emissions and improve overall efficiency in the port area. Both existing and emerging control measures are analysed for their potential to reduce emissions and/or improve efficiency.

This technical document studies black carbon emissions from the international commercial shipping industry. As ships emit more particulate matter and black carbon per unit of fuel consumed than other fossil fuel combustion sources due to the quality of fuel used, it introduces measurement and data availability, in order to provide abatement options.

FAO projects relate to indigenous peoples even if indirectly, in their promotion of biological and cultural diversity as the underpinnings of food and livelihood security as well as quality of life.

This interactive tool facilitates learning on the potential benefits and tradeoffs in linking social protection, resilience and climate change policies at local, national and global level.
