WMO Statement on the Status of the Global Climate in 2005
This technical document is part of an annual series published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on the status of the global climate. It highlights that the year 2005 was most likely one of the two warmest years on record since 1850. The 2005 hurricane season saw some of the most destructive hurricanes on record, which claimed more than 3 000 lives in Central America and the United States. Disastrous floods and landslides due to extreme precipitation events were also reported worldwide. Prolonged drought conditions continued to affect parts of Africa, Australia and the western United States. In 2005, western parts of Europe were also under the grip of a severe drought. Arctic sea ice during September 2005 was the lowest on record and below the average for the fourth consecutive year. The ozone hole in 2005 was the third largest recorded after 2000 and 2003. In December, central Europe and central and eastern parts of Asia experienced significantly colder than average temperatures.

WMO Statement on the Status of the Global Climate in 2006
This technical document is part of an annual series published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on the status of the global climate. The document notes that all the years since the beginning of the new century, including 2006, rank among the 10 warmest years of the observational period ranging from 1850 to the present. It stresses that in the course of the year, Australia, the United States of America and parts of Europe experienced exceptional heat waves. The 2006 typhoon season, even if below average in terms of the number of events, caused disastrous impacts on some south-east Asian nations. Devastating floods and landslides due to heavy precipitation events were reported worldwide and especially affected the Greater Horn of Africa and the Philippines. Prolonged drought conditions persisted in Africa, Australia, China and the United States. In addition, the year 2006 continued the pattern of sharply decreasing Arctic sea ice, and the Antarctic ozone depletion reached new record values.

WMO Statement on the Status of the Global Climate in 2008
This technical document is part of an annual series published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on the status of the global climate. It highlights that the year 2008 was notable, in particular, as it signalled positive global temperature anomalies, which positioned it among the ten warmest on record since the beginning of modern measurements in 1850. Several extreme weather and climate events were recorded in various parts of the world in 2008, of which perhaps the most dramatic was tropical cyclone Nargis, which made landfall in Myanmar in May, causing catastrophic destruction and more than 70 000 fatalities. Other parts of the world suffered severe flooding, extreme heatwaves and droughts in 2008, while Arctic sea ice was once more observed to decline markedly, reaching during September its second-lowest historic extent.

WMO Statement on the Status of the Global Climate in 2011
This technical document is part of an annual series published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on the status of the global climate. It notes that the year 2011 was a year of climate extremes around the world. Precipitation extremes, many of them associated with one of the strongest La Niña events of the past 60 years, had major impacts on the world. Significant flooding occurred in many places throughout the world, while major droughts affected parts of East Africa and North America. Global mean temperatures in 2011 did not reach the record-setting levels of 2010, but were still the highest observed in a La Niña year, and Arctic sea-ice extent fell to near-record-low levels. Global tropical cyclone activity was below average, but the United States had one of its most destructive tornado seasons on record.

WMO Statement on the Status of the Global Climate in 2012
This technical document is part of an annual series published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on the status of the global climate. A key result of the present issue is that despite the cooling influence of a La Niña episode early in the year, 2012 joined the ten previous years as one of the warmest – at ninth place – on record. The document also includes information on regional climate features.

Global Report on Human Settlements 2011 – Cities and Climate Change
This analytical report reviews the linkages between urbanization and climate change, two of the greatest challenges currently facing humanity in the 21st Century, and whose effects are converging in dangerous ways. It illustrates the significant contribution of urban areas to climate change while at the same time highlighting the potentially devastating effects of climate change on urban populations. It reviews policy responses, strategies and practices that are emerging in urban areas to mitigate and adapt to climate change, as well as their potential achievements and constraints. In conclusion, the report argues that urban areas have a pivotal role in both climate change mitigation and adaptation and identifies strategies and approaches for strengthening this role.

The Adaptation Coalition Toolkit – Building Community Resilience to Climate Change
This manual consists of an adaptation coalition toolkit developed to empower people by creating more inclusive, cohesive, and accountable societies in the face of climate change. The framework for this toolkit was developed from testing its implementation over a two-year period in 24 Latin American case study communities in five countries. The purpose of this toolkit is to guide facilitating groups or teams of development practitioners in pursuing participatory collaboration with communities to research and implement adaptation coalitions. This is done to assist the locality in adapting to the local manifestations of climate change. Using the Adaptation Coalition Framework (ACF) as an adaptation tool strategically links the multiple resources of market, state and civil society at various levels to best facilitate the adaptation of vulnerable communities to climate change.
