This document presents the BioCarbon Fund (BioCF), a public-private initiative, housed within the World Bank’s Carbon Finance Unit, mobilizing resources for pioneering projects that sequester or conserve carbon in forest and agro-ecosystems, mitigating climate change and improving rural livelihoods.

This technical document presents the findings of research undertaken in six villages in two drought-prone districts of Andhra Pradesh, India, Mahbubnagar and Anantapur. This activity report consists of a fact sheet summarizing GEF’s main activities to address climate change. As the financial mechanism of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the GEF allocates and disburses about $250 million dollars per year in projects in energy efficiency, renewable energy, sustainable urban transport and sustainable management of land use, land use change, and forestry.

GTOS is a global system for observations, modelling and analysis of terrestrial ecosystems to support sustainable development. This analytical report aims to make explicit the ethical implications of global climate change. It is not always clear how to conceptualize many of the ethical questions raised by the various effects of global climate change, and on what basis to choose between different conceptualizations. It is also not always clear how to interpret the common but differentiated responsibilities that international organizations, states, governments, non-governmental organizations, businesses, or individuals may have in responding to global climate change. This manual consists of a toolkit that aspires to support all those involved in the design of measurable, verifiable, and reportable adaptation initiatives. It provides step-by-step guidance and methodologies. This Toolkit is organized into four main sections, each reflecting a vital component in the process of formulating and articulating an adaptation initiative: 1) Making the Case, 2) Key Steps, 3) Building Consensus, 4) Tools and Methodologies.

This manual provides development practitioners and policymakers with proven tools and useful tips to assist in designing and implementing effective adaptation initiatives. The document illustrates the unique role women and men play in shaping these kinds of initiatives and aims to ensure that forthcoming Community-Based Adaptation (CBA) projects contribute to the achievement of gender equality and women’s empowerment by integrating a gendered perspective into CBA programming and project design.

This technical document depicts the major signs of climate change and its physical impacts in Latin America and the Caribbean, drawing on historical analysis of variables such as temperature, precipitation and sea levels. In addition, it details the effects of climate change on ecosystem services, human health and the region’s vulnerability to extreme events. Lastly, it provides an analysis of global and regional greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and identifies possible options in the region for mitigating the impact of climate change.

This analytical report calls for accelerating research, monitoring and modeling of glaciers, snow and their role in water supplies. It highlights the vulnerability and exposure of people dependent upon rivers to floods, droughts and eventually shortages as a result of changes in the melting and freezing cycles linked with climate change and other pollution impacts. It also stresses that adaptation strategies need to be wide ranging covering issues such as urban planning, improved water storage networks and improved water efficiency in sectors such as agriculture.

This manual is designed to assist countries in making informed decisions in their technology choices. Building on lessons from earlier Technology Needs Assessment (TNA) efforts over the past decade, it offers a systematic approach for conducting assessments in order to identify, evaluate and prioritize technological means for both mitigation and adaptation. It also provides processes and methodologies for uncovering gaps in enabling frameworks and capacities and for formulating a national action plan to overcome them, as part of overall climate change strategies and plans.

This manual links classroom activities to real-life issues relating to climate change, environment, sustainable development, cultural diversity, science and more. It also stimulates and encourages practitioners, young and old, to take action by becoming involved in caring for their environment, and in understanding and influencing local government policy and action.
