This analytical report is concerned with strategies for the sustainable development of tourism in the face of the challenges of climate change. It looks both at mitigation strategies, to limit tourism’s impact on climate change, and at adaptation strategies, to cope with the likely consequences. Tourism currently accounts for an estimated 5 % of anthropogenic CO2 emissions, however, on a business as usual projection these emissions would more than double over the next 25 years.

This analytical report analyzes legal and regulatory frameworks that could be applicable to potential Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) deployment in the Balkan and Southern African regions; assesses the role of climate finance to support prospective investment needs for CCS projects in developing countries; and examines potential structures for financing power plants equipped with CCS and the impacts of CCS on the electricity rates through a leveled cost of electricity model.

This manual provides practical tools for city planners and decision makers to reform urban planning and infrastructure design according to the principles of eco-efficiency and social inclusiveness. The guidelines build on knowledge accrued and lessons learned though case studies and pilot projects conducted in cities across Asia and Latin America. It is based on the recognized need for an urgent shift in the way urban infrastructure is planned, designed and managed in order to respond to the challenges posed by rapid urbanization, globalization and climate change.

A background report was developed to identify existing initiatives working towards capacity development and to make sure that the strategy complements and reinforces ongoing work. The report also outlines actions to strengthen climate change education and identifies key organizations working in this field.

This analytical report calls for a new “green” industrial revolution through improvements in resource efficiency in the Asia Pacific region. It indicates that the region’s growth has lead to high levels of pollution, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, biodiversity loss, deteriorated ecosystems and resource depletion. It estimates that per capita resource consumption of materials needs to be reduced by 80% to achieve sustainable development. According to the report, if current trends are not reversed, the Asia-Pacific region could be the most important driver of global resource use and related environmental impacts, including resource scarcity and climate change.

This policy document includes a roadmap intended to pave the way for low-carbon industrial growth in developed and developing countries by providing a vision of industrial carbon capture and storage (CCS) up to 2050. In particular, it undertakes an assessment of the potential for CCS in five industries that offer the most promise for early and/or large-scale application: high-purity CO2 sources, iron and steel, cement, refineries and biomass conversion. Its insights aim to help policy makers evaluate the benefits of CCS technology and hence make informed decisions. It also offers investors an assessment of the potential for CCS in industry.

This analytical report provides information for national-policy makers and international negotiators on what the international climate change architecture needs to deliver to effectively mobilise private finance and investment for forests at the necessary scale. In particular, it addresses the critical question of what policy options, and what type of REDD+ funding mechanism, are most conducive towards effectively financing forest-based climate change mitigation (with a focus on Phase 3 of REDD+ implementation). This analysis can also be useful for financial institutions in understanding the history and current proceedings in the international negotiations on REDD+ funding.

This manual is part of a series of practical guidance documents and toolkits to support national and sub-national governments to achieve low-emission, climate-resilient development. It aims to help countries design and establish a National Climate Fund that is tailored to their priorities and builds on existing governance, policy and fiscal frameworks and systems. The principle audience for this publication is the decision-maker at the national and sub-national levels, as well as domestic and international experts involved in assisting governments in establishing institutions and frameworks to support the management and delivery of climate finance.

This technical document provides an overview of the IPCC First Assessment Report. The overview brings together material from the four Policymaker Summaries. It presents conclusions, proposes lines of possible action (including suggestions as to the factors which might form the basis for negotiations) and outlines further work which is required for a more complete understanding of the problems of climate change resulting from human activities. Because it cannot reflect all aspects of the problem which are presented in the three full reports of the Working Groups and the four Policymaker Summaries, it should be read in conjunction with them.
