Energy Efficiency and the Finance Sector – Executive Summary

This policy document summarises a United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) survey among financiers on lending activities and policy issues aimed at providing an evidence base on current lending activities in the energy efficiency space, as well as, views on this issue. The survey explored: whether and how external drivers to reduce energy use on the supply and demand side are impacting lending activities, both in terms of client demand, due diligence procedures, and new product development; specific financing issues for energy efficiency; the role of government regulation in developing this market; other issues relevant to the evolution of energy efficiency financing and investment.

A Global Green New Deal

This policy document presents a “Global Green New Deal” (GGND) to create a post-recession economy that is sustainable in the medium to longer term. GGND has three broad objectives. In the short term, it should make a major contribution to reviving the world economy, saving and creating jobs, and protecting vulnerable groups. In the medium term, it should promote sustainable and inclusive growth and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The Kenya Atlas of Our Changing Environment, produced at the request of the Kenya Government, provides visual and compelling evidence of the rapid changes taking place in the country’s critical ecosystems due to pressures from human activities. Global Climate Change: Risk to Bank Loans

The purpose of this policy document is to evaluate the impact of climate change related risks on bank borrowers, utilizing as much data and analysis as possible. Declaration on Climate Change by the Financial Services Sector

This policy document presents the «Declaration on Climate Change by the Financial Services Sector». It has been launched by UNEP FI on World Environment Day, 5 June 2007 and represents the first global statement on climate change by the finance sector. The essence of the declaration is a recognition by financial institutions from around the globe that anthropogenic climate change is real, the cost of inaction will be extremely high, financial institutions must take greater action and integrate climate change into their everyday decision-making, and governments need to do more, namely set ambitious, long-term targets for emissions reduction.
