This slide presentation introduces the IFC’s Approach to Climate Change in the Electricity Sector. Electricity supply contributes 25% of current global greenhouse gas emissions and is expected to contribute 38% by 2030. In fact, the most carbon intensive fuel (coal) is often the most available and lowest cost source of electricity. At the same time more than 1.7 billion people currently live without access to electricity. IFC´s approach to climate change in the electricity sector focuses on efficiency and has four components: demand side management; transmission & distribution; grid connected generation; distributed generation.

This analytical report was prepared as a result of the First International Conference on Climate Change and Tourism which was held on 9-11 April 2003 in Djerba, Tunisia. This activity report describes and evaluates a pilot project on climate change and food security in Ghana. The objective of the project is to create a platform for a learning process among rural populations, researchers, and policy makers in Ghana to better understand the linkages between climate variability and change on the one hand and household food security and well-being on the other hand.

This activity report describes and evaluates a country project aimed to foster collaboration between local communities and scientific organizations to identify and implement responsive water management actions in Mali. The project coupled community experience with output from a water planning system that allowed for the identification of various adaptation options that would be feasible and concurrent with community needs. The communications materials developed, which included music and theater as a way of explaining the adaptation options available, make an important and significant contribution to the field of risk communications.

This activity report provides a detailed description and evaluation of a pilot project aimed to advance capacity for climate change adaptation among rural communities in Niger and Tunisia. In particular, the project identified the measures adopted by local population to adapt to the environmental changes occurred in the last decades and studied the vulnerabilities of the local ecosystems in order to develop inclusive and focused strategies.

This activity report describes the experiences and the preliminary results of a participatory video project for promoting community-based adaptation in rural Malawi. Through collaboration between the Red Cross and the Meteorological Services, subsistence farmers learned about climate change and how to respond to its impacts. Then they learned how to operate a video camera, develop a script and make a film showing examples of the adaptation practices they have been developing. Participatory video is a suitable tool for up-scaling successful community-based adaptive measures.

This activity report describes and evaluates a country project aimed to strengthen capacity for climate change adaptation in Bangladesh. 9 adaptation strategies have been tested at household level in 120 highly vulnerable households (40 poor and marginal farmers, 20 agri-labourers, 20 landless women, 20 Indigenous people and 20 small traders). The adaptation options have been implemented from September 2008 to January 2009. At the same time there was ongoing assessment of efficacy of the options by the project Monitor.

It assesses the impacts of climate change and community-based adaptation strategies. This activity report describes and evaluates a pilot project aimed to strengthen community-based adaptation to climate-sensitive malaria in Kenya. In particular, its main objectives were: to identify possible adaptation strategies, compare them using multiple criteria and select the most sustainable alternatives; to identify risk communication methods and materials, select appropriate ones, tailor them to the local contexts, and implement them; to develop and apply indicators to monitor the performance of the overall project.

This activity report describes and evaluates a country project aimed to develop local adaptation strategies of the coupled social-environmental system to climate change in the Mongolian rangelands as well as to synthesize these findings and apply them to similar ecological regions. A fragmentation of the cultural landscapes in the arid and semi-arid lands of Mongolia has increased vulnerability and reduced the adaptive capacities to climate variability of traditional pastoral systems, which have evolved over thousands of years.

This activity report describes and evaluates a pilot project aimed at communicating risk to policy makers and vulnerable community for assisting planning process in adaptation strategy to climate change at district level in India. The project succeeded in bringing the issue of climate change to the forefront at least in one district, which is where its primary focus was, and in generating new information and awareness. 

This manual presents the main tools to assess vulnerability and adaptation strategies. This publication stresses that different situations require appropriate tools and explains the different options currently available. Examples and indicators are also provided.
