This activity report presents the Strategic Framework that guides the Bank Group’s operational response to new development challenges posed by climate change within the principles, policies, and directions of the UNFCCC process. Since the framework was adopted, the WBG, building on significant previous experience, has rapidly expanded its climate change related work and collaborative partnerships with developing country governments and other stakeholders. This slide presentation introduces the IFC’s Approach to Climate Change in the Electricity Sector. Electricity supply contributes 25% of current global greenhouse gas emissions and is expected to contribute 38% by 2030. In fact, the most carbon intensive fuel (coal) is often the most available and lowest cost source of electricity. At the same time more than 1.7 billion people currently live without access to electricity. IFC´s approach to climate change in the electricity sector focuses on efficiency and has four components: demand side management; transmission & distribution; grid connected generation; distributed generation.
