  • Sand Art on UNECE Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution

This video highlights air pollution as the world’s largest environmental health risk. It damages ecosystems and biodiversity and decreases agricultural crop yields. In 1979, UNECE member States agreed to reduce their emissions to atmosphere, signing the first international treaty to deal with air pollution on a broad regional basis. Improving air quality benefits our health, economy and environment – including our climate.

The activity report aims to: show how relatively small interventions can make a significant difference in human lives if there is a clear objective, strong commitment and genuine partnership; inspire replication of success stories in different contexts and/or at a larger scale; and document best practices, drawing on the findings of external evaluations. All success stories follow the same structure, namely the challenge faced, the actions taken, the results achieved, and the future plans, to demonstrate the continuity of the development process and its long-term benefits. Success stories include technical cooperation concerning: technology for bringing unused forest materials into efficient economic use as biomas; energy efficiency investment projects for climate change mitigation; and biodiversity conservation in projects supporting transboundary cooperation.

  • The European Forest Sector Outlook Study II - 2010-2030

This technical document covers the 27 members of the EU, as well as Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, illustrating the consequences of today's policy choices for the future of forests. It notes that in the long term the sequestration capacity limit of the forest will be reached, and the only potential for mitigation will be regular harvesting, to store the carbon in harvested wood products and to avoid emissions by substituting wood for non-renewable materials and energy sources. It also predicts the consequences of a more innovative approach to wood product design, supply and marketing, as well as to forest management; and outlines win-win opportunities in developing the use of harvest residues, recovered wood and landscape care wood from urban and highway trees.

This activity report was prepared in preparation for a joint workshop. The workshop, which brought together a wide range of experts, including representatives from governments, academia, as well as inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations, provided an important first opportunity for considered discussions on a complex set of critical issues that has so far received little attention.

A concrete follow-up includes the establishment of an intergovernmental UNECE Expert Group considering the subject in depth (2011-2013, now extended to 2017) and publishing a substantive final report, including policy recommendations, in 2014 (“Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation for International Transport Networks"). UNCTAD participated actively in the work of the Expert Group and continues to do so, following the extension of the EG mandate.

  • Water in a Changing World

This analytical report provides a comprehensive analysis of the state of the world’s freshwater resources. It includes a chapter on water and climate change. This phenomenon can directly affect the hydrologic cycle and, through it, the quantity and quality of water resources. It can lower minimum flows in rivers, affecting water availability and quality for its flora and fauna and for drinking water intake, energy production, thermal plant cooling and navigation. Anthropogenic climate change can also directly affect demand for water, when demand for crops increases in certain seasons, for instance for the implications of climate change on uncertainty in agriculture.

  • Guidance to the Protocol on Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers

This guidance document aims to assist Parties in implementing the Protocol on PRTRs. It also serves to promote understanding of this novel regulatory instrument and especially of the public’s role in promoting better environmental performance through the study and use of PRTRs. PRTRs can help countries meet the objectives of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change treaty since they allow to monitor the release of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and of other toxic substances into the air, water and soil that seriously impact the environment and human health.
