  • Building Capacity for LDCs to Participate Effectively in Intergovernmental Climate Change Processes: Achievements 2014-2017

    This analytical document assesses the capacity building efforts dedicated to the Least Developed Countries. Decisions made at the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – such as those related to finance, adaptation, mitigation, technology, and capacity building – have major ramifications for LDCs. To ensure that the interests of LDCs are adequately and fairly reflected in the ongoing climate change negotiations, it is imperative that LDCs engage effectively in intergovernmental climate change negotiations, decision-making processes and eventual implementation of the decisions taken.

  • Comparative Analysis of the UNFCCC REDD+ Related Decisions and Other Multilateral and Bilateral Requirements to Access Results-Based Payments / Results Based Finance for REDD+ Results-Based Actions

    This guidance document aims to provide a neutral comparison of the similarities and diferences between the UNFCCC REDD+ decisions and the Forest Carbon Partnership Carbon Fund’s Methodological Framework, as well as Germany’s REM Programme. There were two main objectives in conducting this type of comparative analysis. The first is to support countries to address their needs to consider these similarities and diferences, as well as potential implications of these, in order to design efective and coordinated REDD+ Emission Reduction Programmes in their countries. A second objective of the document is to serve as a useful input to support the GCF work on REDD+ RBPs / RBF.

  • Impacts of Climate Change on World Heritage Coral Reefs: A First Global Scientific Assessment

    This activity report provides the first global scientific assessment of climate change impacts on World Heritage coral reefs. Soaring ocean temperatures in the past three years have subjected 21 of 29 World Heritage reefs to severe and/or repeated heat stress, and caused some of the worst bleaching ever observed at iconic sites. The analysis predicts that all 29 coral-containing World Heritage sites would cease to exist as functioning coral reef ecosystems by the end of this century under a business-as-usual emissions scenario.

  • Clear the Air for Children

    This guidance document looks at how children, particularly the most disadvantaged, are affected by air pollution. It points out that around 300 million children live in areas where the air is toxic – exceeding international limits by at least six times – and that children are uniquely vulnerable to air pollution, breathing faster than adults on average and taking in more air relative to their body weight. The document also notes that air pollution is a major contributing factor in the deaths of around 600,000 children under age 5 every year and threatens the health, lives and futures of millions more.

  • Global Climate Commitments in Action: 2016 Progress Report

    This report presents country trends in climate technology transfer needs, assessed throughout a period of 3 years. The findigns highlight that demand for technology transfer in support of achieving countries' national commitments is growing rapidly. Approximately 30% of all incoming mitigation-related requests focus on energy efficiency. Among adaptation-related requests for technical assistance, an increasing number of countries are focusing on early warning systems. A growing number of requests include appeals for assistance in catalysing project financing; the consideration of gender is essential too.

  • Pivotal Soil Carbon

    This technical document focuses on the link between environmental change and carbon. When contained in greenhouse gases, carbon is a part of the problem. But in its organic form in the soil, carbon represents a major part of the solution. Increasing soil carbon builds a reservoir and helps to offset greenhouse gas emissions. It also contributes to the fertility of the soil, the foundation for all land-based  natural and agricultural ecosystems.

  • Third IMO Greenhouse Gas Study 2014: Executive Summary and Final Report

    This technical document provides updated emission estimates for greenhouse gases from ships. According to estimates presented in this study, international shipping emitted 796 million tonnes of CO2 in 2012, which is about 2.2% of the total global CO2 emissions for that year. By contrast, in 2007, before the global economic downturn, international shipping is estimated to have emitted 885 million tonnes of CO2, which is 2.8% of the total global CO2 emissions for that year.

  • Ad Hoc Expert Meeting on Addressing the Transport and Trade Logistics Challenges of Small Island Developing States: Samoa Conference and Beyond

    This activity report reflects the outcome of the discussions that took place at the UNCTAD ad Hoc Expert Meeting held in the lead up to the Third International Conference on SIDS (Samoa Conference 2014). The Ad Hoc Expert Meeting provided a platform for expert discussions on transport-related challenges facing SIDS and on how best to address these challenges, in the run-up to the Samoa SIDS Conference.   • The Gender Advantage: Women on the Front Line of Climate Change

    This guidance document illustrates IFAD's experience in closing the gender gap and mobilizing the "gender advantage" in climate change adaptation through ten case studies from accross the world. The case studies show that gender-sensitive adaptation results in better livelihood options and incomes, improved yields, more food security and reduced workloads for women an d their families. They also show that women and men are better able to make informed decisions about their lives, thus balancing their human development priorities when giving attention to sustainable resource management.
