  • Pivotal Soil Carbon

This technical document focuses on the link between environmental change and carbon. When contained in greenhouse gases, carbon is a part of the problem. But in its organic form in the soil, carbon represents a major part of the solution. Increasing soil carbon builds a reservoir and helps to offset greenhouse gas emissions. It also contributes to the fertility of the soil, the foundation for all land-based  natural and agricultural ecosystems.

  • The Emissions Gap Report 2015: A UNEP Synthesis Report

This guidance document compares the resulting emission level in 2030 with the track towards the agreed political target of a temperature increase no more than 2°C by the end of the century. The report also provides data for the aspirational target of an increase below 1.5°C. In addition, the report analyzes selected areas where enhanced action can be taken and how these actions can be accelerated and scaled up to close the ‘gap’.

  • The Human Cost of Weather Related Disasters

This analytical report demonstrates that since the first Climate Change Conference (COP1) in 1995, 606,000 lives have been lost and 4.1 billion people have been injured, left homeless or in need of emergency assistance as a result of weather-related disasters. The report also highlights data gaps, noting that economic losses from weather-related disasters are much higher than the recorded figure of US$1.891 trillion, which accounts for 71% of all losses attributed to natural hazards over the twenty-year period.

  • The Pivotal Role of Water in Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation

This short video reports on the side event by the same title organized by UN-Water during COP21. A panel discussion brought together intergovernmental organizations, national and local government and the private sector to discuss how climate change impacts will be mostly felt on the water cycle, therefore existing water laws, transboundary agreements, water rights or concessions for water abstraction might need to be revisited and made more flexible to take into account the increasing variability in water availability. Water, land and forest management need to be considered jointly; the nexus approach calls for identifying and increasing synergies between water, energy and agriculture. Representatives of these sectors need to work together at all levels.
