  • Adaptation to Climate Risk and Food Security: Evidence from Smallholder Farmers in Ethiopia

This analytical report aims to explore the impact of climate risk on the risk decreasing practices' adoption and evaluates their impact on household welfare. It shows that as risk increases, the use of risk-reducing inputs increases, such as climate-smart agriculture (CSA) inputs, while the use of modern inputs such as chemical fertilizer decreases. Also, yield-enhancing inputs such as chemical fertilizer and improved seeds are mainly adopted by wealthier households whereas risk-reducing inputs are frequently used by households with a lower level of wealth and limited access to credit.

This technical document from the SEforALL Knowledge Hub conceptualizes a new multi-tier framework for defining and measuring access to energy. Binary metrics such as whether a household has an electricity connection, and whether a household cooks with non-solid fuels, do not help us understand the phenomenon of expanding energy access and how it impacts socioeconomic development. This report heralds a new definition and metric of energy access that is broader, covering energy for households, productive engagements and community facilities, and focusing on the quality of energy being accessed.

  • Bridging the Gap Between Ocean Acidification Impacts and Economic Valuation: Regional Impacts of Ocean Acidification on Fisheries and Aquaculture

This activity report includes conclusions and recommendations of the second international workshop, which was held in November 2012 and brought together 55 experts from 19 countries along with representatives of international organizations. The workshop explored the level of risk, and the resilience or vulnerability of defined regions of the world ocean in terms of fishery and aquaculture species and economic impacts, and social adaptation. The workshop sought to address common themes or specific priorities for action by communities, resource managers and policymakers.

A series of international workshops on the economics of ocean acidification was launched in 2010 by Scientific Centre of Monaco (CSM) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The idea behind it was to provide the platform for a multidisciplinary dialogue between natural scientists and economists. This workshop identified fisheries and aquaculture among the main economic sectors impacted by ocean acidification.

This analytical document presents that the mangroves of Central Africa which are found in Cameroon, Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Sao Tome and Principe, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola, could be amongst the most carbon-rich ecosystems in the world. Each hectare of cleared pristine mangrove is estimated to release 1,299 tonnes of C02 per year. However, until mangroves are included in the national definition of forests, many countries will be unable to access carbon incentives, improved governance, jobs and a range of other benefits under the global REDD+ programme.

  • Climate Change and Health Impacts: How Vulnerable Is Bangladesh and What Needs to Be Done

The report quantifies the impact of climatic variability on health in Bangladesh. It uses a combined data set that integrates geographically-referenced national health surveys with local weather stations located across the entire country over a 30-year period. The uniquely rich data source - combining health, a wide range of socio-environmental information with local climate conditions- as well as its large spatial and temporal scale, make it possible to address limitations in current research in the area of health and climate linkages. The findings are broadly in line with evidence from epidemiological studies that focus on the effect of climate conditions on both the transmission cycle and the incidence of disease. They confirm that the incidence of illnesses is strongly associated with sharp changes in temperature and precipitation between seasons. The study also looks at the institutional readiness and geographical targeting of health and other developmental institutional interventions to deal with climate induced health risks.
