  • Water in a Changing World

This analytical report provides a comprehensive analysis of the state of the world’s freshwater resources. It includes a chapter on water and climate change. This phenomenon can directly affect the hydrologic cycle and, through it, the quantity and quality of water resources. It can lower minimum flows in rivers, affecting water availability and quality for its flora and fauna and for drinking water intake, energy production, thermal plant cooling and navigation. Anthropogenic climate change can also directly affect demand for water, when demand for crops increases in certain seasons, for instance for the implications of climate change on uncertainty in agriculture.

  • WMO Statement on the Status of the Global Climate in 2008

This technical document is part of an annual series published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on the status of the global climate. It highlights that the year 2008 was notable, in particular, as it signalled positive global temperature anomalies, which positioned it among the ten warmest on record since the beginning of modern measurements in 1850. Several extreme weather and climate events were recorded in various parts of the world in 2008, of which perhaps the most dramatic was tropical cyclone Nargis, which made landfall in Myanmar in May, causing catastrophic destruction and more than 70 000 fatalities. Other parts of the world suffered severe flooding, extreme heatwaves and droughts in 2008, while Arctic sea ice was once more observed to decline markedly, reaching during September its second-lowest historic extent.

This technical document analyzes the claims of technology transfer made by project participants in the project design documents for 3296 registered and proposed CDM projects. Roughly 36% of the projects accounting for 59% of the annual emission reductions claim to involve technology transfer. Among other findings, the report observes that technology transfer is more common for larger projects and projects with foreign participants; technology transfer is very heterogeneous across project types and usually involves both knowledge and equipment; and the technology originates mostly from Japan, Germany, the USA, France, and Great Britain.

  • China Biogas Project Turns Waste into Energy - BBC World Documentary Featuring IFAD-supported Project in China

This video introduces the issue of biogas as an alternative source of energy. Animal manure is a source of methane, the main component of natural gas and a potent greenhouse gas when released to the atmosphere. But methane can also be captured and used as a source of clean, renewable and affordable energy. An IFAD-supported project in China provided about 30,000 poor households with nearly 23,000 ‘biodigester’ tanks for biogas production. As a result, methane emissions dropped, incomes rose and household sanitation and health improved.

This analytical report presents the evolution of climate in West Africa and analyzes the possible impacts of climate change on food production and food security in the region. Climate variability is deeply rooted within West African society. The 1930-1960 wet period, the 1970-1980 droughts and the return of rainfall in the 1990s and 2000s illustrate this clearly and have demonstrated the population’s vulnerability, in particular in the Sahel zone.

It traces in considerable detail the pathways through which shifts in temperature and precipitation patterns create serious additional barriers to the achievement of the child survival, development and protection goals embraced by the international community. The role of children as vital participants and agents of change emerges as a key theme.

This policy document was prepared for the Round Table on Climate Change at the thirty-first session of IFAD's Governing Council. It presents a discussion on the impact of climate change on agriculture and smallholders farmers. Among the many mitigation measures currently under development, some could provide new opportunities to hundreds of millions of smallholder farmers, pastoralists and forest dwellers, through their roles as sequesters of carbon, through the changes they can make in their land use and cultivation practices to reduce GHG emissions, and as small scale producers of clean energy.

  • FAO Fact Sheet - Climate Change, Energy and Food: Climate Change, Fisheries and Aquaculture

This policy document presents major climate change threats to fisheries and aquaculture. These include higher water temperatures, rising sea levels, melting glaciers, changes in ocean salinity and acidity, more cyclones in some areas, less rain in others, shifting patterns and abundance of fish stocks. The document underlines that climate change compromises the sustainability and productivity of a key economic and environmental resource, but it also presents opportunities, especially in aquaculture.

  • FAO Fact Sheet - Climate Change, Energy and Food: Climate Change, Water and Food Security

This policy document discusses the impact of climate change on water resources and, consequently, food security. It argues that these impacts will vary tremendously from place to place. It is expected that elevated temperatures will benefit agriculture in the northern latitudes, while large parts of the arid and semi-arid tropics will face declining rainfall and runoff . This is an ominous trend for the mostly food-insecure countries located there. After presenting the current situation and future perspectives, the document analyses five key policy responses.

  • Forests - Climate Change, Biodiversity and Land Degradation - Joint Liaison Group of the Rio Conventions

This analytical report is the first step to enhance collaboration between the areas of climate change, forests, combating desertification, biodiversity conservation and sustainable use. According to the intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the conservation and restoration of forests can considerably reduce emissions at a low cost and with potential co-benefits for adaptation and sustainable development. Further co-benefits can be achieved when steps to combat land degradation and conserve biodiversity are included in forest conservation and restoration.
