  • Gender and Climate Change - Women Matter

This analytical report seeks to draw attention to the gender dimension of climate change and the need to integrate gender issues in climate change responses, with particular emphasis on women’s concerns. The report is divided into four sections. The first highlights the inevitability of climate change, its impact on the poor and vulnerable, its implications for sustainable development and the need for effective adaptation and mitigation measures. It also underscores how climate change would disproportionately affect women and what needs to be done to ensure that women’s concerns are adequately addressed. The second looks at how climate change would impact key climate sensitive sectors, the gender dimension of the impacts, and proffers recommendations on what should be done to reduce the vulnerability of women to these impacts, and enhance their adaptive capacities. The third provides an overview of financing and capacity building initiatives that could be accessed to fund adaptation and mitigation programmes and projects. The final section makes concluding remarks on the basis of the findings of the preceding sections.

  • Gender and Desertification: Making Ends Meet in Drylands

This document addresses the issue of gender and desertification. It looks at how women and men have different roles and needs, and often their access to land, water and other assets is not equal. Lessons from IFAD-supported projects show that both women and men benefit from a gender approach that reinforces their joint participation in restoring the productivity of degraded land, and ensures that women are involved in planning and in carrying out dryland development activities.

  • Global Climate Change: Implications for International Health Policy

This policy document presents an article from WHO staff on Global Climate Change and the various implications for international public health policy. It highlights that the most effective responses are likely to be strengthening of the key functions of environmental management, surveillance and response to safeguard health from natural disasters and changes in infectious disease patterns, and a more pro-active approach to ensure that development decisions serve the ultimate goal of improving human health. Climate change therefore demands that we intensify our efforts in preventive public health and place that crucial task at the core of sustainable development.

  • Green Jobs: Improving the Climate for Gender Equality Too!

This brochure argues that climate change is not gender neutral. Women are increasingly being seen as more vulnerable than men to the effects of climate change because they represent the majority of the world’s poor and are proportionally more dependent on threatened natural resources. Additionally, women tend to play a greater role than men in natural resource management – farming, planting, protecting and caring for seedlings and small trees – and in ensuring nutrition and as care providers for their families. The document also presents what the International Labour Organization (ILO) is doing to promote women’s involvement in green jobs and suggests further action. Also available in Portuguese.

This policy document is targeted at National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) around the world that need to deal with practical questions on extremes and provide information services for climate change adaptation strategies. It responds to the need of WMO Members to enhance climate monitoring capabilities for the generation of higher quality and new types of products and services. However, it is important to note that this document does not cover every type of extreme. It focuses on weather and climate extremes that are defined as rare events within the statistical reference distribution of particular weather elements at a particular place. The extremes considered are for weather elements that are monitored daily, such as temperature and precipitation.

  • Human Development Report 2009 Overcoming Barriers: Human Mobility and Development

This analytical report applies a human development approach to the study of migration. It discusses who migrants are, where they come from and go to, and why they move. It looks at the multiple impacts of migration for all who are affected by it. It also addresses environmental issues that can be a key driver of human movement. In particular, climate change is projected to increase environmental stress in already marginal lands and to raise the frequency of natural hazards. Continued greenhouse gas emissions are likely to be associated with changes in rainfall patterns, desertification, more frequent storms and rises in sea level, all of which have implications for human movement.

  • Kenya Atlas of Our Changing Environment

The Kenya Atlas of Our Changing Environment, produced at the request of the Kenya Government, provides visual and compelling evidence of the rapid changes taking place in the country's critical ecosystems due to pressures from human activities. The side-by-side display of historical and current remote-sensing images highlights forest degradation, wetland drainage, and shrinking lakes to the impacts of refugees on fragile ecosystems and signs of coastal degradation. The Atlas provides a good evidence base for strategic intervention by the government and communities.

  • Learning Module on Resource Efficiency

This module is arranged to address four main issues around the role of resource efficiency in environmentally sustainable economic development. Firstly, it explores what is resource efficiency, then it discusses why it is important for Asia Pacific economies, how it can be measured and how it can be achieved. Measuring and monitoring resource use and emissions as well as resource efficiency and emissions intensity of economic activities is an important tool to underpin the policy planning process.

  • Least Developed Countries – Step-by-Step Guide for Implementing National Adaptation Programmes of Action

This manual aims to support least developed countries (LDCs) in designing the implementation of national adaptation programmes of action (NAPAs), and to guide country teams in accessing existing funding from the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) for implementing their NAPAs. In particular, the guide was developed to address the obstacles that LDC Parties face in accessing the LDCF. It has been developed for a very specific audience, in particular, the LDC NAPA teams, including officers in government agencies and the non-governmental community, as they plan the implementation of NAPAs, and Global Environment Facility (GEF) agency officers working on NAPA projects at the country level.
