  1. Workshop on Greening the Future: Bridging the Standardization Gap on Environmental Sustainability

    This workshop aims at raising awareness of the importance and opportunities of using Information and Communications Technology (ICT) standards to foster green growth and sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region. The first day of the workshop presents major contributions made by the ICT sector to the creation of a low carbon economy, to environmental sustainability and to the development of smart sustainable cities. The second day of the workshop consists of a technical session to provide an overview of how green ICT standards are being developed and how they can be implemented at the national level. This technical session also presents some key International Telecommunication Union (ITU) recommendations related to ICTs, environment and climate change.

  2. E-learning Course on Sustainable Urban Land Use Planning

    This e-learning course aims to ensure that participants have a functional and integrated understanding of the dynamics of urban land use and to demonstrate how to effectively utilize policies and planning instruments to manage urban growth and achieve sustainable, equitable and efficient development outcomes. The course is composed of 7 modules, including one specifically on climate change and land use planning. It features a library of case studies that illustrates good practices in sustainable land use planning from around the world. In addition, links are provided to other relevant World Bank Institute (WBI) e-learning products, including courses on slum upgrading, street addressing, safe and resilient cities, and cities and climate change.

  3. Towards Climate Responsible Peatlands Management Online Event

    This online event gathers practitioners, policy makers, entrepreneurs, researchers and civil society organizations interested in responsible management of peatlands and climate change to discuss climate responsible management opportunities for peatlands to reduce the GHG emissions, provide ecosystem services and improve livelihoods as well as the assessments of GHG emissions from drained peatlands in agricultural use. The event culminates to a webinar on 3 October 2013 that focuses on different peat soil classification systems and GHG emissions from intensively managed peatlands.

  5. International Symposium on Sustainable Cities: Empowering Local Governments through Capacity Building

    This international symposium intends to strengthen dissemination and sharing of good practices and lessons learned on fostering sustainable cities, in recognition of the role of cities in protecting the environment, improving disaster risk reduction (DRR) and resilience and reducing poverty. The symposium aims to identify strategies to strengthen local government institutional and technical capacity to address poverty reduction and slum upgrading, urban development, urban economic growth, urban transport and water and sanitation. The symposium also aims to identify areas for further capacity building and knowledge sharing and to identify innovative financing models to support urban infrastructure. The event brings together representatives of governments, including and local government and planning officials, UN agencies, multilateral and regional development banks, the private sector and civil society in plenary sessions, working group sessions and panel discussions.

  6. Workshop on Strengthening Capacities to Access Climate Finance

  7. E-learning Course on Developing and Monitoring Agriculture Carbon Projects

    This new course is based on the new Sustainable Agricultural Land Management (SALM) carbon accounting methodology approved by Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), developed by the BioCarbon Fund and piloted in Kenya. It presents how carbon is monitored and accounted, how the new methodology is applied in Kenya, and how it can benefit smallholder farmers. 

    The course is comprised of 4 modules:

    - Agriculture's Potential in Reducing Climate Change Impact;

    - SALM: A New Agricultural Carbon Accounting Methodology;

    - Soil Organic Carbon Accounting in agricultural projects; and

    - The case of Kenya Agricultural Carbon Project.

  8. Launch Event - National Strategy to Strengthen Human Resources, Learning and Skills Development to Address Climate Change in Malawi

    Malawi is one of five pilot countries that implement a UN CC:Learn Project on Strengthening Human Resources and Skills to Address Climate Change in 2011-2013. The projects aim at supporting countries in taking a strategic and results-oriented approach to climate change learning. The project in Malawi is coordinated through a National Coordination Mechanism bringing together different Government sectors, national universities, private sector and civil society organizations. Through a multi-stakeholder and multi-sectoral process the country developed a National Strategy to Strengthen Human Resources and Skills to Address Climate Change.

  9. E-Learning Course on Climate Change Diplomacy: Negotiating Effectively Under UNFCCC

    This online course on climate change diplomacy develops participants’ understanding of the climate change policy framework, by building an appreciation of the science, causes and impacts of climate change, the history of the policy-making process and the framework of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). It also considers the pertinent challenges currently facing diplomats and international decision makers in making progress with what is currently on the negotiating table. The course takes a close look at the negotiations to-date and considers key topics for negotiators as we move towards establishing a new global agreement on climate change by 2015. The course takes a close look at gender in the negotiations and also the specific interests of parties who are most vulnerable to impacts of climate change.

  12. Blended Learning Programme on Science and Policy of Climate Change

    This 12-week program on science and policy of climate change consists of four learning modules spread over three weeks on 1) science of climate change, 2) impacts of climate change, 3) understanding climate change, and 4) action and political economy. The duration of each module is 20-25 learning hours. The program is delivered through a blended learning format comprising video-recorded lectures, academic articles and multimedia among others. The program targets development practitioners, policy makers, the corporate sector, graduates and mid-level professionals.

    This Structured Learning Program for Energy Efficiency in Public Buildings equips different stakeholders with technical and program management skills, tools and knowledge on the “how” of identifying, developing and implementing energy efficiency programs in public buildings.   15. In-Session Workshop on Technology Needs Assessments

    This in-session workshop aims to share experiences and lessons learned from the Technology Needs Assessments (TNA) process between various stakeholders with a view to supporting action on mitigation and adaptation. In particular, the in-session workshop aims to address the following questions:

    -What are the experiences and lessons learned from the TNA process?
    -What are the specific needs and practical actions that could assist countries in implementing the results of TNAs?
    -How can the TNA process be linked to other planning tools under the Convention?

  16. Fourth Workshop on Enhancing the Regional Distribution of CDM Projects in Asia and the Pacific

  17. Course on Andean Climate Variability and Change

  21. E-learning Course on Policies for Low Emissions Development: From Strategy Design to Implementation

    This e-learning course starts by discussing the rationale for Low Emissions Development (LED) policy and the expected benefits of such policies. The discussion considers both contributions to global emissions reductions and local development opportunities. It continues with a broad overview of LED policy instruments and is enriched with examples of how these instruments have been implemented worldwide. Individual lessons provide more details on the design and implementation of specific policy approaches, including information and labeling programs, voluntary industrial agreements, performance and technology standards for the industries and vehicles, emissions trading systems, and carbon taxes. The course finalizes by providing policy diagnosis tools and strategic guidance for policy implementation. The diagnosis tools can help countries to identify and select policy instruments suitable to their specific needs.

  25. Latin American and Caribbean Carbon Forum 2013

    This Forum aims to serve as a platform for promoting the discussion and exchange of experiences among stakeholders and provide the participants with the latest developments regarding emissions trading schemes, low emission development and the future of the carbon markets. The Forum also aims to facilitate debates around the international and national climate change mitigation policies to promote greenhouse gases (GHG) emission reductions. Participants at the Forum can expect to:

    - Be updated on different views of challenges associated with global climate change and most recent developments in the international carbon market;
    - Discuss with project developers and technical specialists about best practices and lessons learned for the implementation of Clean Development Mechanisms (CDM) projects in Latin America and the Caribbean region;
