6th Symposium on ICTs, the Environment and Climate Change

This symposium aims to move forward the agenda on using Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to monitor climate change, mitigate and adapt to its effects and, in this light, identify future requirements for the United Nations Agency for Information and Communication Technologies (ITU)’s related work – including standardization of ICT equipment and networks as well as development activities. Topics to be discussed include mitigation and adaptation to climate change, e-waste, disaster planning, cost-effective ICT technologies, methodologies for the environmental impact assessment of ICTs, challenges and opportunities in the transition to a green and resource efficient economy.
This is a trade fair and knowledge sharing platform for carbon investments in Africa that brings together representatives from designated national authorities (DNA), national focal points, representatives from several UN agencies, governments and the private sector. It includes matchmaking and deal facilitation sessions that enable potential CDM project participants and developers to showcase their projects to interested parties, including investors and carbon buyers.

The Second Forum on Climate Change in the Near East Region is dedicated to the theme “climate change, agriculture and food security” and has the objective of enhancing Member Countries’ capacities to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change and variability on agriculture and food security. The Forum is intended to take stock of the countries’ knowledge and gaps, to provide an opportunity for exchange of experiences and to identify specific needs for support and regional cooperation. The event is expected to come up with practical recommendations for follow-up actions to address the identified gaps, including national and regional project profiles, as well as a declaration delineating commitment and a roadmap for implementation of these recommendations.

This workshop is one of three integrated regional workshops for UN country teams (UNCTs) on mainstreaming environment sustainability, climate change and disaster risk reduction in UN country programming. The workshops are organized by the UNDG Task Team on Environmental Sustainability, Climate Change and Rio+20, in cooperation with the UN System Staff College (UNSSC), and the Capacity for Disaster Reduction Initiative (CADRI). Support is provided by UNITAR (through UN CC:Learn), UNDP (through BDP and BCPR), UNEP, and ISDR.

Side Event - Progress on Adressing REDD+ Safeguards

The side event is designed to showcase the work on safeguards undertaken thus far at both the national and global level and the advancements made by leading countries such as Ecuador. It also aims at providing concrete examples of how countries are addressing the promotion and awareness raising of REDD+ safeguards in the readiness phase.
This climate change education day aims to raise awareness about climate change in schools and universities in Africa. It consists of a set of lectures and videos in English on the scientific, economic and social aspects of climate change and a discussion forum which offers participants the chance to directly interact with the lecturers.
