  1. COP 17 Side Event: Kick Starting Africa’s Carbon Markets: Success Stories from the Field

    This side event provides project developers, carbon asset developers, banks, and investors the opportunity to learn more about how to benefit from the African Carbon Asset Development (ACAD) Facility grant making and training activities. It showcases successful African examples of financing and implementation of CDM and Gold Standard VER projects. Lessons learned by banks and project developers involved in the ACAD Facility are shared on how to make carbon finance work in Africa. Presentations are followed by an interactive discussion on how to scale up and replicate demonstration projects and how to enhance ACAD’s impact as it enters its second phase from 2012. A video-documentary, launched in Durban at the COP-17, showcasing ACAD projects and their impacts on the ground, is also screened.

  2. COP 17 Side Event: Strengthening Institutional Capacities for Climate Change Research and Training: Lessons-Learned

    This side event has the objective to share the benefits and challenges of North-South, South-South triangular cooperation as an approach to institutional capacity building, and to recommend how this approach can be up-scaled. Nine research and training organizations from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Pacific and the Caribbean collectively form a Climate Change Capacity Development (C3D) network. The Partners collaborate in developing and testing methodologies in support of climate change decision-making.

  3. One UN COP 17 Side Event: Results-Based Capacity Development to Address Climate Change - Lessons Learned from UN Supported Projects

    This One-UN side event showcases and discusses examples of innovative and successful capacity development projects and initiatives supported by the United Nations. The event features two parts. Following a brief introduction and welcome, four country representatives present tangible capacity development projects/initiatives. Three of the statements present results from successful capacity development projects supported by UN organizations. The fourth statement is from a country participating in the 2011-2013 UN CC:Learn Pilot Implementation Phase which focuses on addressing human resource and skills development challenges. Drawing upon the presentations, the second part of the event features a moderated discussion focusing on opportunities and challenges to scale up results-based and sustainable capacity development to address climate change.

  8. Climate-Smart Knowledge Day – Managing Ecosystems for Sustainable Livelihoods

    The Climate-Smart Knowledge Day in Durban gives participants the possibility to: hear from policy-makers on the implications of climate-smart practices in their countries; receive updates on results, information and knowledge addressing the challenges of food security, agriculture and climate change; and learn about the way forward for partnerships on climate-smart agriculture including linkages to the green economy. The Climate-Smart Knowledge Day will also showcase FAO support and partner country efforts to strengthen knowledge and policies for climate-smart agriculture that address food security and climate change together to achieve countries’ development goals.

  10. Media Training Workshop for Developing Country Journalists

    This two-week media training workshop is a capacity-building initiative intended for developing country journalists. The invited participants are journalists from Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean. A special focus is on the Kyoto Protocol’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and how it benefits people on the ground, not least in Africa.

Specific workshop objectives include to: develop a common understanding of the UN CC:Learn project; define the national coordination structure for the project; take stock of relevant national and international initiatives; identify key actors to be engaged in developing the National Strategy; agree on the objectives, TOR and work plan for developing the National Strategy; foster engagement of educational and vocational training institutions. The UN CC:Learn pilot projects aim at supporting countries in taking a strategic and long-term approach to climate change learning with the ultimate goal to mainstream climate change learning within existing learning systems.

  13. Regional Workshop on Climate Change - Impacts, Adaptation and Development in Mountain Regions (Africa)

    This regional workshop brings together government delegates, policy makers, scientists and climate change experts to strengthen knowledge about the climate change impacts in mountain areas, to discuss adaptation options in mountain ecosystems and to promote better alliances and cooperation amongst countries with mountain territories so to reinforce their understanding of key issues. The meeting is complemented with a field visit to Mount Elgon and communities on its slopes to observe emerging micro-climate changes, their causes and effects so to discuss coping mechanisms and suitable adaptation strategies. This workshop is part of a series of three regional workshops organized within the framework of the “Strategic Initiative for Climate Change Impacts, Adaptation and Development in Mountain Regions”.

  25. Asia-Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Forum 2011

    The Adaptation Forum 2011 provides an occasion to share frontline findings and innovations, opportunities and challenges in mainstreaming climate change adaptation into development. Building on from Adaptation Forum 2010, it aims to focus on “Adaptation in Action” signifying a shift from deliberations to decisions, plans to policies and policies to practices. The interactive Adaptation Forum 2011 gathers adaptation practitioners at global, regional, national, and sub-national levels. The format is a diverse range of plenary and keynote sessions, panel discussions, roundtables, thematic side events, market place, photo and poster exhibitions and film festival. Sessions will be facilitated by eminent climate scientists, adaptation experts and development planners from the region.
