  1. Course on Understanding and Adapting to Climate Change in Mountain Areas

    This summer course focuses on the theme “Understanding and adapting to climate change in mountain areas”. It aims at: 1) enhancing awareness about climate change impacts and development challenges in mountain regions at the international/regional levels and about the related international processes; and 2) promoting capacity building for politicians, scientists, and practitioners as regards to climate change adaptation in mountains and negotiations in international fora. It is open to a maximum of 30 professionals who are part of the national delegations to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

  2. Webinar on Cutting Carbon, Improving health

    This webinar considers the health co-benefits of climate change mitigation policies. It stresses that there is increasing evidence that well designed climate mitigation strategies can bring large, beneficial effects on a range of health outcomes. Aligning climate mitigation and public health goals could therefore bring major gains in human welfare, environmental protection, and economic efficiency. The webinar includes presentations and interactive discussion with leading international figures in the field, on the evidence, opportunities and constraints in achieving low-carbon, health promoting policies. It lasts 90 minutes with opportunities to ask questions to the panel.

  3. Workshop on Tools and Methodologies to Build Sustainable Cities

  4. Workshop on the Implementation of Article 6 of the Convention in Least Developed Countries

    The workshop on the implementation of Article 6 of the Convention in least developed countries (LDCs) aims to share good practices, lessons learned and experiences in undertaking activities related to climate change education, training, public awareness, public participation, access to information and international cooperation on these matters. It is also designed to assess the status of the implementation of the amended New Delhi work programme in LDCs and identify gaps and barriers to the implementation of the work programme as well as emerging needs and priorities of LDCs, which could be included as possible elements of a successor work programme on Article 6 of the Convention.

  5. Course on Energy Sector Strategies to Support Green Growth

    This course covers essential aspects of renewable energy and energy efficiency policies and discusses how they can contribute to green growth strategies. The overall objective of this course is to provide a better understanding of the policy instruments used to promote the deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies in developing countries. It begins with an overview of the range of policy tools available, including price instruments (e.g., feed-in tariffs), quantity instruments (e.g., tradable renewable energy certificates) and standards (e.g., building codes for energy efficiency). The course ends with a discussion on how these policies can be integrated into overall green growth strategies at the national level.

    This e-learning course aims to provide the skills and knowledge needed for participation in multilateral negotiations, in particular in the context of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). In particular, it aims to enable those working in relation to climate finance, with respect to diplomatic engagement, public and/or private sector activities, to work efficiently towards finding agreement on pertinent policy making challenges. It shall enable participants to enhance their understanding of the key objectives and instruments of international climate finance, the multilateral policy framework and key negotiation issues crucial to reaching a post-2012 agreement, particularly with repspect to the forthcoming negotiations in Qatar later this year (UNFCCC COP18).

In particular, it discusses how smallholder agriculture practices – and support to them – should change as a result of a transforming context for rural development that modifies physical and socio-economic landscapes and makes smallholder development more expensive. Michele de Nevers of the Center for Global Development then reflects on implications for adaptation finance.

  14. Course on Urban Management Tools for Climate Change

    This course introduces climate change as an integral part of sustainability, its impacts and main strategies for mitigation and adaptation. It offers specific practices to manage urban design and environmental infrastructure, in particular energy, transport, housing and water. The course addresses: vulnerability assessment (week 1), mitigation strategies (week 2) adaptation strategies (week 3), and local climate change plans (week 4). By the end of the course, participants are expected to be able to prepare local climate change plans, which address the global challenges yet focus on concrete local actions.

  15. E-learning Course on Safe and Resilient Cities

    This e-learning course focuses on disaster risk management (DRM) at the city level. Participants are expected to learn, in particular, about planning and decision making under uncertainty and how to make their cities more resilient to climate change impacts and natural disasters. It is divided into 4 modules: 1) Introduction; 2) Technical analysis and vulnerability assessment; 3) Accessing finance for urban DRM and resilience; and 4) Building and implementing the local resilience action plan (LRAP).

  22. Second International Symposium on Effects of Climate Change on the World’s Oceans

    This symposium addresses various issues regarding the role of climate change on the oceans, including: sea level rise, changes in thermo-haline ocean circulation, acidification, oligotrophy of temperate seas, changes in species abundance, distribution and phenology, loss of biodiversity, all of which will have serious implications for marine living resources. It includes workshops on: Climate change projections for marine ecosystems: best practice, limitations and interpretation; Coastal blue carbon: mitigation opportunities and vulnerability to change; Effects of climate change on advective fluxes in high latitude regions; Public perception of climate change; Climate change and range shifts in the ocean: detection, prediction and adaptation; Beyond dispersion: integrating individual-based models for bioenergetics and behavior with biophysical transport models to predict influences of climate change on recruitment processes in marine species. The event brings together experts from different disciplines to exchange observations, results, models and ideas at a global scale and to discuss the opportunities to mitigate and protect the marine environment and its living resources.

Additionally, participants will begin to develop basic skills for applying the green economy concept in a real world economic, policy and/or personal context. The course pedagogy is adapted to professionals in full-time work. The estimated average workload is seven hours per week over a 6 week period.

  25. Writeshop on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction

    This writeshop aims to support young scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and others from Africa who are working in the field of climate change and disaster risk reduction in gaining enhanced awareness of the process of writing papers for academic journals and producing a peer-review, publishable quality article. It involves one-on-one work with facilitators to provide guidance and training on academic writing skills and argumentation. The Writeshop lasts 5 days. The first day includes plenary sessions and the second day, small group discussions and independent work. Participants are then required to briefly present their articles. The third day includes an optional field trip. During the fourth and fifth day, the new versions of the documents are written in collaboration with the facilitators.
